Practice of Yoga Key to Positive Body Image

Aurora, CO - What does it mean to completely accept and love one's self? Where can the line be drawn between excessive self-criticism and a healthy desire to improve one's appearance? How does a woman know when she's found it?

These are just some of the questions examined in Natural Body, Natural Shape: Develop a Strong Self-Image, Good Health, & Ageless Grace & Beauty Through Yoga, a book by Barbara B. Moroney. In it, Moroney, a longtime yoga aficionado, asks, "Should you never try to make yourself look better? Should you not color your hair when you start to go gray? Should you not try to lose weight if you are overweight? Should you never have cosmetic surgery?"

Moroney wasn't unlike many women in today's society concerned and unhappy with their appearance. Nearly ten years ago, she began to explore the insecurities, fears and judgments that were preventing her from feeling happy about herself. She confesses that this is still an ongoing journey for her, although she has found some balance through the regular practice of yoga.

This book emphasizes that every woman has a natural body shape she can cultivate. The development of this more natural shape involves an exploration into one's mental, emotional and physical habits, relates Moroney. And the key to changing these habits is the discipline one learns through yoga practice. The rewards of fostering a more natural body shape are clearly listed in the book's subtitle: a more positive self-image, better health and ageless grace and beauty.

The author explains that the value of yoga in transforming one's life is that it provides the tools necessary to create a more healthy relationship with the body. Because the skewed view of media in today's society will likely not change, Moroney advises it is better to expend energy to change what can be changed - the self. With the daily practice of yoga, the body doesn't become an ideal body that can never be real, but the view of the body becomes much more rewarding.

"I wrote this book hoping it would inspire other women who, like me, struggle to find self-acceptance and peace with their physical bodies and themselves," the author shares. "In addition to the chronicle of my journey, I have included related exercises for my readers to try. It takes work and dedication to bring about change and while this book can be read without doing any of the exercises, I recommend working with them for a richer experience."

Natural Body, Natural Shape can be purchased in bookstores or online.
